easy to do if you're on leash, we train leash cue pressure so he will refocus to us if we apply leash pressure. The downside is obviously, they have to have a line of path to see your hand gesture. Overall its good to train both, but i personally think hand gestures are a lot easier.since i can continue carrying on a conversation with another human, but also gesture to my dog to correct a behavior at the same time. if you're worried about their hearing, you can also ask a vet to test their hearing sensitivity. especially if your dog has gone through several ear infections. Some dogs are just naturally inclined to listen better than others, which could be breed or health specific. or it's hard for him to be attentive for my sound, when there are other loud sounds happening. I suspect that his hearing is just not as good, unless i'm speaking really loudly. We have a working type hound and they are known to be hard of hearing - long ears and stubborn streak.ĩ/10 he will obey hand gestures.but for voice commands, i get a success of 6/10 times. The better you can adjust to a style of communication they understand the more they can give back to you. Most important is learning the best way to communicate with your dog, and know while there are distinct similarities, every dog is an individual. (Ask him if Jerry is here and he runs out to check the Jerry's parking spot to see). He also knows the name of everyone in the family and the regular visitors we have. While our Aussie knows the name of every single one of his toys and will bring you the exact one you ask for. Just prefers the clarity of hand signals. Its not deafness, he is a full time off leash service dog who lives on a farm with me. One of my dogs doesn't want to accept learning a word for most things, but picks up on sign language incredibly well (knows sign for shut the door, turn off the light, and a number of tricks). The only part that matters to me is we have an agreement on what I'm asking for.

My dogs respond to a handful of vocalizations(not necessarily words) hand signs and body language. *normal is a pretty useless word in my opinion.
